EDI Event - Talk on Liverpool-born Black activist Dorothy Kuya In-Person
Join Research Associate Janaya Pickett at the KnowHow Space, Sydney Jones Library, for a talk on Liverpool-born Black activist Dorothy Kuya (1933–2013).
Kuya was a formidable anti-racist campaigner for over seven decades, starting as a member of the Young Communist League, Colonial People's Defence Association, and New International Society in the 1940s. Throughout the decades, she remained central to the Black British Civil Rights and major anti-racist movements, playing a prominent role on Liverpool's Community Relations Council and later as Race Relations Advisor for Haringey Council, alongside the late MP Bernie Grant and ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Kuya returned to her native Liverpool, where she helped establish the Granby Residents Association and became a driving force behind the development of the International Slavery Museum. In 2021, University of Liverpool students and staff voted to rename the former Gladstone Halls at Greenbank Student Village as Dorothy Kuya Halls. Kuya was also awarded a posthumous Citizen of Honour award by Liverpool City Council in 2023.
