English Language Centre - Speaking at University In-Person
Speaking at University is a friendly, interactive series for students who want to feel more confident speaking in university life. Whether you’re contributing in seminars, explaining ideas, joining discussions, listening actively, or building an argument, these sessions help you develop practical strategies for real academic situations. The sessions are open to all students, but they are especially useful for international and multilingual students who want a supportive space to practise, reflect, and connect with others. Expect discussion, collaboration, useful language, and ideas you can use straight away in class and beyond.
Building successful seminar discussions
What makes a seminar discussion actually work? In this session, you’ll explore the features of effective group discussion and practise using “talk moves” that help discussions become more focused, collaborative and productive.
