KnowHow Academic English: Advanced Grammar (Online) Online

The course aims to develop your understanding and use of advanced grammar, by examining a selective overview of the key areas of English grammar that you need to master, in order to express yourself correctly in a grammatically-precise manner appropriate for academic and professional writing.

These classes are open to students from all academic subject areas, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, research students and staff. Each week there are two sessions (online and on campus) which are the same so you can choose the time which suits you best.

Session 8: Subject-verb inversion

A small number of adverbs cause the subject and verb to switch places (i.e. invert) when they are moved to the start of a clause. Since this structure moves a word into an unusual position at the start of the clause, inverted sentences sound more emphatic, and the adverb is given more weight.
