The course aims to develop your understanding and use of advanced grammar, by examining a selective overview of the key areas of English grammar that you need to master, in order to express yourself correctly in a grammatically-precise manner appropriate for academic and professional writing.
These classes are open to students from all academic subject areas, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, research students and staff.
Session 8: Subject-verb inversion
A small number of adverbs cause the subject and verb to switch places (i.e. invert) when they are moved to the start of a clause. Since this structure moves a word into an unusual position at the start of the clause, inverted sentences sound more emphatic, and the adverb is given more weight.
