Do you know how the journal impact factor is calculated? Do you know why it was originally invented? The answer may surprise you. Metrics like the impact factor and h-index are bandied about a lot amongst researchers but very few people tend to know what exactly they measure or how they are calculated.

In this session Sarah will talk about:

  • Key metrics, how they are calculated and what they measure
  • Alternative metrics (altmetrics)
  • How to use metrics to your advantage and responsibly
